Peerless Plays "O" Roll on Style "A" Spool Frame
By Don Neilson
I have a Peerless Cabinet style nickelodeon that plays an 'O' roll on an
A-roll spool and is wound opposite of the O-roll spool frame. It is on
a 3-1/2-inch core like an A roll, instead of 3-inch core that a normal
'O' roll is on. When I got it, I assumed it was not original. Since
then I have seen a another late Peerless keyboard piano that was
playing an 'O' roll and is spooled the same way as this cabinet model.
I am now convinced that Peerless made these originally. The reason
I believe this is because the fellow with the Peerless keyboard piano
has four original Peerless-labeled rolls with the A-roll spooling, but
the rolls are 9-holes-to-the-inch 'O' rolls. Both machines look like
they were never tampered with, and the four original rolls appear to be
on original spools. My guess would be that, late in production,
Peerless changed to the more readily available O-roll format for their
limited nickelodeon production.
Has anyone else seen any Peerless-labeled, 9-holes-to-the-inch rolls on
a 3-1/2-inch core?
