Coin Pianos at Farrell's Ice Cream Parlors
By John Rutoskey
I am wondering if anyone knows who built the coin pianos for Marriott's
late 1970's chain of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour Restaurants?
I remember that the one here in town was an upright player piano
with its original stack, but the spoolbox shelf was cleared off,
onto which was fitted a Seeburg-like spoolframe where the original
spoolbox was. Through a series of chains and belts, the spoolframe
was driven by a small Bodine motor. The front panel was moved forward
and a new lid was made for the piano to accommodate this change.
The workmanship seemed very good and the piano looked respectable.
It had a nice piece of art glass, a very passable case finish and a
push-pull coin slot. I'd like to know if anyone else remembers these
and do any still exist?
