Michael Cornfield just happened to have a copy of "a nice roll" he
wanted us to hear when he was in Reno a few weeks ago for a bowling
convention. After we heard it we agreed it was not only nice, but the
best J. Lawrence Cook roll we have ever heard. It's "Hot Papa Blues",
composed by Gertrude Davis, played by Eubie Jones (one of Cook's noms
de guerre), on U.S. 43411, dated 1/26 on the label. According to our
knowledgeable friends, this is the only copy that is known. As one of
them said, "That is most likely the best 12-bar blues performance by
J. Lawrence Cook that I have heard in my lifetime."
Michael kindly offered to let us recut it, and we are in the process
of doing so. We'll let people know when it is ready, dependent on the
Tonnesen's work load. Anyone who would like a copy, please let us know
so we can order enough rolls. We plan to sell copies for $15.00 each,
plus $3.50 shipping for US media mail. A word sheet will be included.
