I have a friend who wishes to sell an Aeolian player pipe organ. This
uses the double row 176-hole tracker bar.
She would prefer to sell to someone who will restore the instrument so
that it may once again bring enjoyment to those who hear it. However,
if it does not sell as a complete unit, the individual components may
have to be sold.
This is a two manual, twenty rank instrument ( OPUS 1735) built in
1930 for J. Arnot Rathbone of Elmira NY and currently installed in his
former mansion, "Strathmont". It consists of fifteen ranks situated
in a concrete room under the house with the sound rising from the pit
through a shaft into the main hallway and a five rank Echo Organ
mounted in a third floor chamber that speaks into the Great Room at
the end of the main hall.
Having heard the organ play when I was much younger I can bear witness
to the magnificent sounds that it can produce. I believe that it was
functional through the mid 1950s. Both the main chamber and the echo
organ are under expression. A contact at the Organ Historical Society
informs me that this is a late model and has the most advanced chest
valve system that Aeolian produced. Its contract cost at purchase was
just under $20,000. This was in an era when the organ technicians who
installed it were earning about $11.00 per week.
Today the rolls are gone and the console is missing its pedal board,
but the rest of the instrument appears to be intact except for a few
pipes in the echo organ that will need some body and fender work,
thanks to the students at Elmira College. The college had possession of
the house at one time.
The wind turbine/pressure regulator and vacuum pump in a separate
part of the basement are in good shape but would need checkout and
relubrication before the fuses are installed in the power panel. I
believe that recuts of the rolls are available. There has been some
discussion of Aeolian rolls in the MMD. Replacement of the pedal board
should not be a problem either.
The pedal division consists of 16' f, 16' p and 8' p flutes, EXP. I
contains 8' diapason, 8' f flute, 8' Spanish flute, 4' flute, and 8'
clarinet. Swell EXP. II has chimes, 8' harp, 4' celesta, 8' string f,
8' string p vibrato, 8' string ff, 8' oboe, 8' vox humana, 16' swell,
4' swell plus tremolo and swell unison release tablets. Great EXP I
has 8' clarinet, 4' flute, 8' Spanish flute, 8' flute f and 8'
diapason. Great EXP II has 8' string pp, 8' string p vibrato, 8'
string f plus the celesta, harp and chimes. The top row of tablets
has tremolo, 16' great, 4' great, 8' vox humana, 8' oboe and the great
unison release.
Finally the echo organ tablets are tremolo, echo 16', echo 4', 8' vox,
4' flute, 8' string p, 8' string p vibrato and 8' flute p.
Thank you for bearing with me on the above list. I took photographs
of the console to extract that data.
