In the 1950's on the Ed Sullivan show I heard Albert W. Ketelbey's
"In a Persian Market" and fell instantly in love with this composers
music. He was born in 1875 and died in 1959. He wrote a lot of
very nice music, including many classical pieces. Most of us in the
roll collecting know of or have the following in their collections:
"In a Chinese Temple Garden", "In a Monastery Garden", "Sanctuary
of the Heart", etc. He also wrote such pieces as "Jungle Drums",
"Pensee Fantastique", "Poor Little Bird", "Galop Brilliant", etc.
In the 1980's I picked up a music roll, Artistyle, roll number
92621, "Tangled Tunes", a potpourri of 108 favorite melodies humorously
arranged by Albert Ketelbey. It is a favorite of mine, and many people
who have heard it have wanted a copy. I have not recut it yet as the
cost of recutting it will likely be more than I can justifiably sell it
for, as it is a fairly large roll. So a few friends in the music roll
business told me that I must offer some other great rolls to subsidize
the cost a bit. So if you would like a recut copy of this and/or some
of my recuts of some great blues and ragtime rolls, visit my web site
at http://home.earthlink.net/~rollertunes and then go to the recut
section and you will find a lot of great rolls.
A couple of questions that I have, are: Is there any sheet music of it?
I have spent considerable time in various music libraries and have been
totally unsuccessful in locating a copy. Even sadder too, is the fact
that about all I have ever been able to find out about this composer is
about a paragraph of information. If anyone is familiar with the roll,
do you know all 108 tunes? The roll seems to be hand played. The
arrangement and piecing together of the musical pieces is fantastic.
Perchance does anyone know who may have played it? I feel that the
roll may have originally come from London, England.
I also have an original hand-played and hand-edited master roll from
"The Hand Played Music Roll Co. Ltd, of London": roll number 40127,
titled "Rhapsody Appassionata", by A. W. Ketelbey, played by Richard
Wynfield, dated May 1, 1929. Would anyone think it would be worthy of
recutting? Since I do have the master roll copy, was it ever issued in
England? Thanks in advance.
Musically yours
Larry Norman
