The site has been updated tonight with three terrific text articles.
Bob Pinsker sends an extended report from The Chicago Defender dated
Saturday, 12th June 1926, which firmly places JRM's band in St. Louis
c. June 1926. Noble Sissle, (possibly Eubie Blake) play a benefit for
George Walker's mother. Mention of Charley Turpin. Also included in
the report is the shooting of Mamie Smith's husband.
Bob sends another extended report from The Baltimore Afro-American
dated Saturday, April 23, 1927, which mentions Jelly Roll Morton and
Thomas Waller, the distinguished Vendome Theater, Chicago, organist
at his best with "Rusty Pail Blues," and "Sloppy Water Blues."
On the J. Lawrence Cook page is a photograph of his house in Mount
Vernon, NY., which can be accessed from text on the page, courtesy of
Jeff Alterman. Just scroll down the appropriate page(s) until you find
a NEW revolving button.
Michael Hill sends a rare article by George W. Kay. This was published
in Jazz Journal 3rd May 1968. Titled "A Tribute To Roy Carew" the
article tells of Morton's staging of a Grand Movie Ball. I've included
some photographs, courtesy of Warren Trachtman and images of handbills,
courtesy of Roger Richard, which can be accessed from links in the
article.
Musically yours
