Marshall & Wendell String Scale
By Ed Gaida
Tony: I pulled out my string scale book of pianos that I have restrung
over the last 30 years. Here is the scale for a 5'4" Marshall &
Wendell grand; the notes also say "With Ampico".
First number is the size of wire starting in the treble. The second
digit is number of notes of that size wire.
#13 6
#13-1/2 4
#14 6
#14-1/2 4
#15 4
#15-1/2 4
#16 4
#16-1/2 4
#17 6
#17-1/2 6
#18 4
#19 4
#20 2
Total notes: 58
Schaff Bass String Scale Number: #356A
(The pin size was 3/0 X 2-3/8".)
Now, I cannot be sure that this is the factory original because the man
who worked for me at the time put in half sizes where there were none
originally. Re-scaling pianos can be tricky -- ask Art Reblitz.
I _can_ tell you that this particular piano stands out in my mind as
sounding like a much larger grand using this scale. When we delivered
it to the dealer he was most impressed with the sound versus what he
gave us to start with. Maybe others can be more definitive about the
original scale.
Hope this helps or "stirs the pot"!
