Gluing Ivory Keytops
By Gary Rasmussen

Dick Day said "Contact cement works well..."

I don't think so! Of course it will hold, but I think this is a
poor choice because contact cement is yellow and that color will show
through the ivory.

The problem is that ivory is translucent. In order to make them
white, they were originally glued on the wood with a white "glue wafer"
between the ivory and the wood. Most glues that you might use to
repair the ivory that came off will affect the color and look of the
ivory.

When I saw the posting requesting info on a glue for ivories, I was
interested to see what the responses would be because I haven't found
a glue yet, that when the ivory comes off nice and clean, when you glue
it back on, it stays there, and will not discolor the ivory (at least
to my satisfaction).

When I replace ivories, when I really want them to look perfectly
matched with the others, I usually go to the trouble to remove all
of the original glue down to the wood, and use a new glue wafer from
Schaff. This is a LOT of work to do it right, but I think it is the
best. If anyone knows of a good glue to use on ivories for a quick and
easy repair, that doesn't discolor them, I would like to know also.
