Pianocorder Cassette Player Maintenance
By Tom Lear

The problem: When playing tapes on the Pianocorder, the stabilization
light keeps coming on, no matter what position the adjusting wheel is
in.

[ The light extinguishes when the data bit stream from the cassette
[ tape is detected and correctly synchronized. The adjusting wheel
[ controls the read head azimuth. -- Robbie

There are several things that could contribute to this problem. This
is just the latest problem/fix I have discovered that is not already in
the MMD Archives.

The problem can be in the record/play switch. Because most Pianocorder
tape decks are only used in the play position, and never or rarely in
the record position, the naturally occurring cleaning action of the
switch being engaged/disengaged does not occur, causing the switch
contacts to become dirty and develop high resistance. The high
resistance then interferes with the transmission of the tape signal.

The solution: Place a blank tape in the deck and depress the record
button a half-dozen times. This should clean the contacts of the
play/record switch. If you get some relief but not complete, repeat.
In the worst case scenario it will be necessary to open the tape deck
to get at the switch, and clean the switch with a blast of contact
cleaner.

[ and check the condition of the felt pressure pad. -- Robbie
