Indeed, the word chad was used in conjunction with Teletype tape.
Chad is actually a collective noun, as is dirt, etc.
The Teletype perforators of one type completely punched out the hole
and the resulting bits of paper collected in a small bin below the
punch mechanism known as a "chad box" or "chad bin".
The other version, known as "chadless" was punched only partially so
that the paper bit would remain attached. This was to enable printing
on the tape so it would be readily readable, as would not be the case
if the bits were completely punched out leaving holes in the paper
tape.
The pieces that are punched out are individually known as bits.
Collectively, they are known as chad. As there in not "a dirt"
there likewise is not "a chad."
That is, until November 2000 in FloriDUH.
