With 3000+ rolls on the shelves now, I too thought that a "Fine Arts"
rider on my homeowners policy would be in order to insure these rolls,
similar to what I have active with my piano.
So I wrote a one-page appraisal, describing the general condition,
the environment of storage, and the approximate percentage, count,
and type of rolls on the premises (88n, Ampico, Duo-Art, Welte) and
their average values, with estimates subtotals and a grand-total.
I forwarded this to my friend Kirk Russell, a Rhode-Island piano
technician and player-piano restorer, who agreed to "digitally sign" my
estimate after I explained the values and totals to him over the phone.
Using Kirk's letter head and signature that I had scanned, I digitally
fabricated the estimate to appear as if he had written and signed it on
his letterhead. The document was then faxed to the Insurance company
(all with Kirk's blessings). They phoned him to authenticate the
estimation, and now I'm covered!
So if you feel you can estimate your collection's value, agree to put
it on someone else's letterhead that's remotely attached to 'the
industry' -- it's possible the estimate will be taken as gospel by the
insurer.
