Hi all, I know we have discussed this topic many times but I have
to query some things again. I have just read a copy of Larry Givens'
1963 book, "Rebuilding the Player Piano". There is a chapter on the
Duo-Art and I am curious to get some more opinions on the some of the
adjustments he does.
Remember, the accordion distances are 1/2", 1/4", 1/8" and 1/16".
The test roll has tests from 12 to 18 (I think) which test chords
playing, and then not playing at the levels 1, 2, 4, 8.
Larry Givens suggests that these tests are to ensure that these levels
are correct and if they are not, the adjustment screws on the
accordions are to be adjusted 'til each of these tests passes.
I always thought that these should be calibrated to the correct
distance and I know that others have this opinion too here on MMD.
I would upset the pressure curve and the steps would not be linear,
etc., etc., if these are adjusted.
However, what if the zero, spill and pump pressure are correct but
these tests do not pass 100%? Why were these tests on the test roll if
there is no adjustment for them? Is Larry Givens maybe correct after
all? I can see that a very, very slight adjustment might be necessary
to make the tests pass properly.
I would really like to know if those tests were intended for actually
adjusting the accordions by the factory and, if not, why were they
there? Any opinions?
