Regarding the letter from Abigail Cervantes in 001123 MMDigest.
As a parent of many children, and although I encourage support of this
young lady's interest, may I also encourage those of you inclined to
respond to her to do so in a way that you are not doing her assignment
for her. Provide her information where she can learn how to find the
information herself. The general intent of these assignments is
twofold:
1) to have the student learn about a subject that is not covered in
class, and
2) to learn how to identify, locate and use information resources.
If we respond with "answers" that she can use directly, we have
thwarted the intent of the assignment. May I encourage you to support
her in such a manner that she both learns about player pianos, and
learns how to do research on her own ?
Thanks -- climbing down off the soap box now.
