Separated Sound Board Ribs
By Ana Gerard

To Mike Blackwell regarding the ribs separating from the soundboard
-- that's a tricky question. I have seen a number of pianos where
there is some separation and it never goes any further, and others
where it just continues until...

The main problem with rib separation is the buzz during playing;
not a good problem to fix _after_ you have gone to the work of
restoring the piano.

Check out the book "Piano Servicing and Rebuilding" by Art Reblitz.
He gives great direction on re-connecting the ribs. It seems less
intrusive on the rib structure that the rib bolts sold through the
supply houses.  Good luck!
