Is The Piano Sustain Pedal Needed?
By Jim Cook

I had to make a comment regarding the sustain pedal. If the average tin
eared person were able to obtain the fabled "golden ear", the most of
the piano shaped garbage which is sold new now days, would sit in the
stores unsold. My particular favorite is my Mason Hamlin Upright
Ampico A which I just finished a major rebuild on including new strings,
hammers, all bushings and a full rebuild of the Ampico System new
pouches, valves and all. I regulated it according the Ampico reprint,
and It does very well. It isn't a 9' Steinway, but it sure beats the
new Junk. By the way, this one has a sostenuto action. Far to many
people think that a screaming 20 something person and a screeching
guitar is music, how can we expect them to now better? I guess the
PSO will be with us for many years to come.
