"Vox Liquida" Organ Stop
By John Farrell
Here is part of a message which appeared on the jazz list today :
"I thought you might like to hear about a similar time slip effect
brought about by the organist of one of our local churches. The organ
although old was a very good instrument and the organist raised a
considerable amount of money to have it restored. As part of the
process it was fitted with a device which records what is being played
on a computer floppy disk which can later be played back -- driving the
organ in much the same way as a piano roll drives the piano.
"The organ has a full range of stops including one marked "Vox Liquida".
When this is pulled it opens a small cupboard on the fascia of the
console to reveal a spirit tumbler and several miniature bottles --
whisky, brandy, etc. I am told this is in an honourable tradition,
going back to the Middle Ages in central Europe when the organist in
his corner of an unheated church was in real danger of freezing to
death. They were supplied with a bottle of schnapps to keep body and
soul together."
