Refurbishing Electric Motors
By Don Teach

I am sorry but $600.00 to replace the bronze bushings in a motor and
paint a few parts is just too high. They did not rewind the motor,
only replaced bushings and used an expansion hand reamer for the
bearing bushings. Painting means a coat of paint out of a spray can.

I also used a motor shop on several motors and then decided that
I could do my own work. Its not rocket science.

The reamers for doing the motor bushings were under $30.00 available
from McMaster Carr on page 2167 of catalog 106. The bushings can be
made easily on a lathe in less than an hour. "Metalize the shaft" may
have meant they had to build the shaft up with metal and turn it back
down to proper size, which typically costs $80.00.

To have a motor completely rebuilt in Madison, Wisconsin, by Electric
Motors Service, usually cost around $400.00, with new lead wires,
painting, etc.
