For anyone interesting in tracking down a lead on a Wurlitzer Style 12
PianOrchestra, here is what information I currently have. Maybe two
weeks ago I received an e-mail, excerpted as follows:
Hello, my name is Andrew Barrett and I am 12 years old. I became
fascinated with all types of automatic musical devices since I can
remember... and stumbled on to your site from the Mechanical Music
Digest links page... I was recently looking on Amazon.com for books
under "automatic music" and found this customer review by an
anonymous person from Helena, Arkansas for the Encyclopedia of
Automatic Musical Instruments:
"We now know what it is!" October 30, 1999 (date of review) Just
imagine having something around for years and not knowing what
it is! My sister, Sadie, and I have had this "thing" in the back
room of our late father's ice cream parlor for years. We knew that it
was musical but not much else. With its pretty stained glass windows
and mechanical bird on top, it was just too nice to junk! In 1952
we converted the ice cream parlor to living quarters. I guess
we just kept everything for memory sake. As retired seniors with
not much to do, we recently got "on-line" and Sadie thought it
would be a good idea to see if we could find a book which would
tell us what our music "thing" was. We bought the Encyclopedia
of Automatic Musical Instruments. We now know we have a style 12
Wurlitzer PianOrchestra! Thank you Amazon!"
I have made several inquiries already, one to Amazon.com, but with
no response. One contact, the Delta Cultural Center, suggested
starting at the Phillips County Museum -- (870) 338-7790, as
someone there might have some information or photographs of the ice
cream parlor, or refer me to someone that might be able to help.
Taking a trip to Helena and doing a lot of footwork is probably the
best bet, but that is not something I intend to do. Maybe someone
reading this lives near Helena and will get busy on this. So, there
you have it -- a lead for anyone who is interested. What I want out
of this is pictures and information on the instrument for historical
purposes and my web site.
Please let me know of any discoveries regarding the instrument.
