I can't resist responding to the discussion of the use of hot glue in
restoration work. To restore something, especially a mechanical musical
instrument, is to make it like it was when it was new. It does not mean
to "improve it", or for that matter to alter it in any way. Hot glue has
characteristics which are suited for the purposes for which it was
originally used. Its use again in restoration work is absolutely
essential in preserving the original properties and future
"restorability" of these monuments to early 20th century engineering and
craftsmanship.
35 years ago I thought 30 years was a long time. In those 35 years I
have seen miracle replacement materials that failed miserably (Perflex
and clear vinyl tubing). Admittedly, some modern materials are good;
the polyurethane coated nylon pneumatic cloth, for example.
Other glues have their places in quality restoration work, but
absolutely not in the wholsale replacement of hot glue!
Most Sincerely,
Robert H. Hunt
