Richard Wagner, piano technician, has developed a system for flawless
ivory chip repair. Using an acrylic polymer and two resins of basic
white and yellow, a blend can match any sample.
However, it does not repair plastic, and one must be careful when near
the celluloid front not to cause discoloration. But with a little care,
this margin is negligible and the repair in the ivory is un-noticeable.
I've been using his AcryliKey for years with good success, but now
that the AcryliKey II has been released the process of color matching
is even easier. Within 30 minutes the repair can be buffed and
reinstalled.
Every shop needs this kit and for $40.00 it saves a lot of time trying
to match a replacement ivory. My Mason & Hamlin upright has about one
third of the fronts repaired (kids, you gotta love 'em).
