While the MIDI standard specifies the range of numbers for volume,
it does not specify how that is translated into physical reality.
In other words, MIDI units are inconsistent when translating numbers
to decibels (dB) or the linearity of their scale.

[ MIDI velocity command to the resulting sound amplitude: "Adding
[ 25 units of MIDI velocity doubles the amplitude," i.e., 25 added

[ measurements on my Korg and Roland synths, and Wayne Stahnke says
