Tracker Bar Leaks
By Randy Hayno

While on the subject of Standard and Autopiano I'd like to tell about
a problem I had with the tracking device, so that no one has to go
through what I went through to find the solution.

I rebuilt an Autopiano wind motor and tracking device. The piano was
unrestored and still working so I guess it has had a lot of use.

After the rebuild I expected that the tracking device would work
perfectly. But it didn't work at all. I checked and rechecked
everything but no help. I was really stumped!

After a while and doing some experimentation I discovered that the
system was working with the tubes disconnected but not connected to
the tracker bar. Then I noticed that the tracker bar was very worn
where the edge of the paper was on the tracker bar between the two
holes for the tracking.

I wondered if there was a leak caused by the lifting of the paper up
on the hump caused by the wear? So I took two soft paintbrushes and
held the paper tight to the tracker bar while playing the piano and
the tracking worked perfectly.

To correct this problem I had to take a sanding block and sand the
tracker bar down flat, taking off enough metal to accomplish this.
Using very fine sandpaper and getting finer and finer. Then polishing
the bar back down to a fine polish. After doing this the tracking
worked perfectly!

I hope someday this helps someone not have to pull their hair out,
'cause if they are like me they might not have hair to spare.
