I have come across this subject before and I can't be sure where my
information comes from, but I believe that this was one of Edison's
little secrets. I think that the information was deduced from something
I read about nickel plating once, so "none of this is gospel".
I believe that the stylus was electroplated (nickel plated) in position,
and for some reason the nickel forms a compressive grip on the stylus.
Does this ring any bells with anyone else? I am reasonably sure that
they are held in this way. I'd be interested to follow this thread.
