I was given a converted 5-foot player grand which, when dismantled,
was even worse than I had thought and will make its way to the local
landfill. However I kept the action because the whippen was so
unusual.
There was no name on the piano, even searching under coats of paint
and scraping under the sprayed gold of the harp (that's a whole piano
horror story I won't get into), so I have not a clue to its identity.
The whippen has a Billings brass flange which I had thought was used
on uprights, and the jack heel has a spring that runs from the heel to
the whippen cushion. I decided to keep the action in the event someone
needs a part for a similar action, as I know how hard it is to get
obsolete parts.
Does anyone know what maker used such a whippen on their grands?
