Albert Petrak's local piano man isn't exaggerating. I know
dealers have a tendency to over-inflate and exaggerate their pianos
capabilities, tone, superiority, etc. (Imagine!) But, having been
the exclusive Alabama dealer for Mason & Hamlin since just after the
Burgett's acquisition of this prestigious piano line, I have to confirm
that these Masons are, indeed, extraordinary.
Not just content with a coveted name, the Burgett's (Music Systems
Research, a.k.a. PianoDisc) have been very careful and methodical
about the reintroduction of the Mason & Hamlin piano line. Production
is at the Haverhill factory, using original tooling and scale designs;
very little has been changed. Their "snails-pace" production is
producing gorgeous instruments with resplendent tone that are a delight
to play. National sales director Cecil Remariz is a joy to work with
and actually listens to dealer comments and takes suggestions back to
the factory. (What? A company that actually listens to us?!)
Three of the Mason & Hamlin models are currently being produced:
the exquisite 7' "BB", the favorite 5' 8" Model "A" and the very rare
50" upright. Rumor has it the concert grand is being considered for
reintroduction. Finishes are currently limited to satin ebony and
satin mahogany although they are certified by the EPA to spray
polyester. The new and limited "Monticello" features a trumpet leg
style and ornamental case.
We have several models and finishes on the floor of our stores but
_nothing_ compares with the 7' "BB"s with a PianoDisc installed.
Properly regulated, and with Wayne Stahnke's Live Performance music
files, it is an experience and a treat to listen to and behold.
At a recent dealer meeting I attended for one of the most prestigious
European piano lines (who will remain nameless), _the_ most talked
about piano at that meeting was Mason & Hamlin. Those who had the line
had nothing but praise, those who didn't had nothing but envy!
We carry several high-end and ultra-cool piano lines (check out Story
& Clark's Hampton Grand or the Peter Maly designed Sauter pianos or any
of the fine Estonia Pianos) but, oh, those Mason & Hamlin's. If you're
ever in the Birmingham area, drop by and be your own judge.
