Musical Box Society International (MBSI) has been approached by the
developers of the ongoing Cooper's Ferry project to make a wonderful
tourist area on the riverfront in Camden, NJ, just across the river
from Philadelphia.
The area already has an aquarium and a Sony concert theater; they are
breaking ground for a Little League softball stadium, and are planning
much, much more. This is all within sight of the original RCA Victor
factory (which is being turned into condominiums).
While there were a few people who tried to cast dispersions on the
project as an unsuitable place because of the surrounding neighborhood,
well, that neighborhood is now gone! The seedy buildings, x-rated
shops and liquor stores are history; they were bulldozed and are
currently being turned into parks. The tram that will cross the river
and connect the Philadelphia riverfront with Camden is just about ready
to be started too.
There are many functions and festivals held on the site and I just
learned that the Republican National Committee has chosen this site,
instead of the Philadelphia area, to hold its convention -- on
the _very spot_ where there will be a building housing "Soundwave:
The Museum of Recorded Sound!" Obviously, the Republican planning
committee feels very safe and comfortable here.
The point of my bringing this to your attention is this: the Republican
National Convention will be broadcast nation-wide. I don't know how
they plan to show the area, but it might be a great opportunity for our
MBSI members to tune in and maybe see the potential new site of the
future MBSI Museum, which will be in the building housing the "Soundwave"
museum.
