In response to Cathy Yax in 000630 MMD; Thorens was a Swiss company
who was bought out by Reuge approximately 10 years ago. The Thorens
music box is a collectors item. They are still around and probably
don't have antique value yet. The value could well be $600 and up
today, depending on the demand.
If you are interested in more disks for the box, you can visit
http://www.themusichouse.com/ and click on "Music Boxes" and then
click on "Tune List & Mechanisms". Select "Reuge & Romance Disks
4-1/2". You will see a list of tunes.
Your Thorens box can be made to play the newer disks with an adjustment.
If you might be interested in doing so, email <info@themusichouse.com>
Second, regarding your Reuge walnut box 5-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 1/36 inches
that plays the "Sound of Music", the height sounds like it should be 3"
and not 1/36. It probably plays a 36-note movement and not an 18-note,
and the price you have found of $250-300 sounds right.
Regarding the porcelain dark navy with gold scrollwork piece, this
sounds like the "Capodimonte Carousels" (also called "Musical
Mosques"). These were very popular in the 1960's and the slots in the
doors were meant to hold cigarettes. The Music House does sell them
also. You can go to the same address above and once in the Music Boxes
page, click on "Capodimonte Carousels". You can see if any of the ones
there resemble the one you have and see the retail price. Prices start
at $300.
Sincerely,
Verna Djiji
