If not for Harvey Roehl and his Vestal Press, I probably wouldn't be
here on the MMD list. His publication of Larry Givens' landmark book,
"Rebuilding the Player Piano", was my first revelation that player
pianos could be restored to life.
In the early 1970s my wife and I were returning via upstate New York
from a second honeymoon in Canada. I was plotting a route to Niagara
Falls when I noticed Vestal NY on the map. On a whim we stopped and
called the Roehls from a phone booth, and got a warm invitation to stop
by and see their collection. Harvey and Marion gave us the grand tour
of their home and workshop. My wife reminds me that she still has
never seen Niagara Falls, but she did enjoy the visit!
We're in no position to pass out sainthood or to dub knights, but if
we could, Harvey would be first in line.
