Hi friends, Moe Goldy sent in a message about the rewind-replay
mechanism on his 1916 Stoddard Ampico [000619 MMD]. This mechanism
was used for at least two years, and probably more than that.
Our 1914 Stoddard upright Ampico has the same mechanism on the top
of the spoolbox. I would imagine that Charles Stoddard was the man
responsible for its invention and installation on the machines. There
are others who have studied the system more than I who would the ones
to contact. Jeffrey Morgan could probably verify whether Mr. Stoddard
was indeed the inventor or not.
The system works well in allowing a person to listen to a particular
passage of a selection over and over again, whether it is at the
beginning or the end of the roll. In the real world, however, it
was an added feature that didn't really get used very much, and was
probably discontinued as a cost cutting measure, even though it was
around for a few years.
