My Aeolian Orchestrelle model W finally arrived from England yesterday
morning. If anyone wants to ship an instrument from the UK, let me
recommend Asconex International Freight Ltd., Pan Depot, Harlestone Rd
Northampton, Northamptonshire NN5 6NU, tel,: 011-44-1604-754755, email
<Asconex@aol.com>. Ask for Bob Beasley. This is the second job they
have done for me, and I would use them again.
This firm does the entire job: moves the instrument from its present
location, packs it, arranges ocean shipment in a container, and sets up
delivery in the USA through a cooperating freight consolidator here,
all for one fee. The only additional expense is the local moving from
the consolidator's warehouse to your home.
And what a job of packing! The organ was put on a pallet and wrapped
with padded paper, waterproof paper, and very heavy polyethylene, all
securely taped. Then a heavy crate was assembled around the whole
thing. Dunnage boards, made from 2x4s, were fitted and nailed around
the outline of the organ to hold it in place, padded with foam. It
will take me years to work off eight sheets of 5/8" plywood and dozens
of pieces of timber. All the loose parts were separately packed in
bubble-wrap and carefully braced in the crate.
One word of advice, though: do some research to find an American
freight consolidator who has an arrangement with a bonded warehouse
near the airport or seaport in your area. This makes the paperwork and
customs clearance easier. For the Northeast USA, A. W. Fenton, in
Cleveland, does a good job.
