It seems that, for all the Wurlitzer instruments that played APP rolls,
there would be plenty available, but they seem to be a scarce item.
It has been reported that two groups are trying to recut these rare
rolls. I am one of the groups and Don Rand is the other. I have tried
to call Don Rand but he does not take my phone calls. It would be nice
to work with him on this project, so if anyone is good friends with him
then tell him to talk to me.
Currently we (my partner is Bob Gilson) are trying to find tunes from
the 1920's on APP rolls. So far Bob has 200 rolls to choose from and
I have about 100 original rolls. 99 percent of the rolls we find have
tunes we do not recognize. It would be great if someone would contact
me who has good tunes on 5-tune Wurlitzer APP rolls. There were
some really good tunes cut by TRT rolls and these songs are short and
not wanted [by us]. They are not marked TRT. They are usually marked
Automatic Player Piano and not Wurlitzer. It also seems that Wurlitzer
may have used numbers twice on their rolls, which makes it more
confusing.
It is interesting that many collectors consider the APP rolls from the
1920's are really good; it was in the 1920's that Seeburg quit making
G rolls for pipes and switched to xylophone arrangements.
If these recutting projects can proceed then the value of Wurlitzer
pianos that use APP rolls should increase. Please help by contacting
me. I also have a few sets of changer chucks left for sale.
Thanks
Don Teach
