I would like to bring up the sealing pouch leather subject because the
Carter brand Rubber Cement has been discontinued for about 2-3 years.
What brands are the rebuilders using for their sealing? This subject
hasn't come up on MMD since Sept. 1998, and it would be nice to see if
anything new has been learned about the subject.
I have tried using the Dow Corning 111 silicone sealant (grease type)
and talcum powder but I am not completely convinced this is the way
to go.
I have been using the Ross rubber cement product No. 44 (which is
acid free) and thinning it with naphtha. This seems to work well
and doesn't seem to affect the stiffness of the leather one bit. Even
though I have been using it for about two years or so, I don't know if
the pouch leather will stiffen with age. I should have made a sample
and stashed it away for testing now.
Sealing the pouches with the Dow Corning RTV #734 sounds like a very
good alternative. Are there any drawbacks other than aging after 25
years? I would think that the rubber cement option might have problems
even sooner.
The MMD archives has information about running tests, but did anybody
save these leather samples so they could be re-tested a few years
later?
