I seem to have stirred up some discussion in the MMD, and have gotten
some private replies on my question of replacement hammer choices for
my Weber Duo-Art grand. Many thanks to all those who replied.
I need to clarify some things I typed too hastily. With two broken
shanks and a lot of slop in most of the flanges, yes, we are replacing
the flanges and shanks, and not considering re-felting the old hammers.
"Drop-in replacement" was my own summary, not my RPT's words,
thankfully.
Actually, it was the choice between two competing makes of shanks and
flanges that he made based on one having the correct spacing from the
shank pivot to the jack pad. He knows that getting that wrong can
change the apparent weight of the action. And he does expect to do
some major work getting everything fit properly, but he _did_ say that
the tails on the NuTone hammers would require less shaping than the
"German" hammers (probably Abel).
One writer said that Renner Blue hammers were the best match to the
Weber originals, and that NuTone hammers were okay but would harden up
more quickly with usage. But the consensus seems to be that if my tech
knows what to do and is willing to do it, I should end up with a good
tone and feel. The whole job, keytops, key bushings and center pivots,
hammers and shanks, is priced at $3000.
Thanks again, Mike Knudsen
