J. Lawrence Cook & Jelly Roll Morton Research
By Karl Ellison

This is a forward from Mike Meddings who wishes to become a member
of this list but hasn't yet been added for some reason. He has done
_extensive_ research on Jelly Roll Morton and J. Lawrence Cook --
please take a look at his web site.

[ News from Mike Meddings: ]

Just a note to let you know that the Jelly Roll Morton Page has been
updated with a massive amount of new documentation. Looks like you
are all going to have to stay up all night to get through it.

The items come via Dr. Robert Pinsker, my West Coast correspondent.
They include:

Items from the Chicago Defender, 22nd July 1922.
  Kid Ory's Sunshine Orchestra.
Jelly Roll Morton at Leak's Lake.

All this from "Ragtime" Billy Tucker's Coast Dope Column.

The next two items are from the San Diego Union newspaper archives
dated 5th February 1923 and 6th February 1923 and concern the arrest of
Chester Carleton. These documents are included for their significant
historical content and value, and they give an insight into the
conditions that the visiting musicians 'South of the Border' had to
work in. I expect that Jim Dapogny and Hal Smith and Butch Thompson
will immediately be able to envisage the scene. So this is why they
called it the 'Wild West'.

The final article from "Ragtime" Billy Tucker's Coast Dope Column,
published in the Chicago Defender, 24th February 1923 is another
version of the Chester Carleton saga. Morton and Earl Whaley are
mentioned.

J. Lawrence Cook Page has also been updated. Prof. Alan Wallace of
Knoxville, Tennessee sends an interesting article which was published
in TIME magazine on 15th February 1943. Alan is currently researching
additional material regarding J. Lawrence Cook's exact birthplace,
together with the census records of Athens, Tennessee.

Musically yours
