Today I discovered the latest novelty in the market of the mechanical
music instruments: the first encyclopedia of mechanical music
instruments just published by Schott. It is not a Q. D. Bowers
"Encyclopedia Number 2" on a CD-ROM -- no, it is entirely different and
complements very well the Q. D. Bowers Encyclopedia. It is very
original, very well provided with technical and historical information
on the mechanical music instruments.
Three persons worked on this project :
Mr. Bernd Enders, music professor in the university of Cologne and
author from many books; Mr. Christian Reuter from the University of
Cologne, music and information specialist; and Mr. Rolf Jacobi, a
very well-informed collector.
With more over 800 illustrations and animations, 60 video clips, 116
sound clips, detailed descriptions of the emergence, development and
make-up of automatic musical instruments, a thorough bibliography, an
index with circa 2,000 entries, a list of 300 museums, collections and
associations, and many other things, it is the most complete work to
date on this theme, and a fantastic "tool" to know, learn, and
appreciate mechanical musical instruments.
It very easy to employ, with German and English text together. It is
made for PC 486/100 or greater (Pentium recommended) with 4-speed
CD-ROM drive, 16 MB RAM, graphic card 640 x 480 with 256 colours,
16 Bit Soundcard, Video for Windows, Win95 or higher.
