Carousel At Rye Playland Needs A Good Organ
By Jeff Alterman
Jody Kravitz:
The carousel at Rye Playland once had a Gavioli band which was very
nice when it played properly. It was removed from the carousel after
the 1990 season and was replaced with a band organ that Gavin McDonough
built using pipes from other old organs including church organs and I
think that there are a few pipes in there from an old Wurlitzer
153 organ. The organ on there which I call the "McDonough 165" using
the facade from the old Gavioli organ is nowhere near as nice as the
old organ and I think that either a restored old organ such as a similar
Gavioli or an accurate replica of an old organ such as a Bruder similar
to the one at Coney Island or a Gavioli replica would be much better
sounding than the organ that is presently on the carousel at Rye
Playland.
If anyone could convince the management at Rye Playland to obtain a
good organ it would be nice thing to have at Rye Playland and the park
CAN afford to spend the money a good organ. If anyone from Westchester
County New York is paying attention please try to spearhead the effort
of getting a good organ for the carousel once again. I think you might
have plenty of company.
