Children and Mechanical Music
By Bob Conant

As some of you know, my wife and I have a fairly large fairground organ
on a sizable trailer that we take to some of the rallies. At these
and other venues where we play the organ, I keep a lookout for young
people of any age who take a more than casual interest in the organ.
Most often they are between the ages of 5 and 10.

When I notice this, I invite them up into the organ trailer to more
closely inspect the mechanism, especially the books going through the
keyframe. I also show them what the keyframe looks like with the
bridge raised so they can see the individual keys that play the organ.

Now, these kids are not generally going to run out and buy a fair organ
but in 20 years they might! I want them to have a very positive memory
of that old guy who let them get a close look at the instrument. The
parents are pleased also but it is the kids who absorb the greatest
impressions at that age.

For what it's worth,
Bob Conant -- Preparing to leave sunny Florida for the trek north
