An interest in mechanical music _can_ be cultivated in the next
generations if you make it accessible to them.
Our local museums experience with the Farrand 88-note I restored for
them has been nothing short of heartwarming -- many elementary school
classes tour the institution every year, and they are invariably blown
away by the amazing piano that plays itself. The museum keeps a
selection of current rolls available so that the kids can hear familiar
tunes -- Lion King, Little Mermaid, Aladdin -- as well as many of the
old rolls.
Who knows how many seeds of interest have been planted by this
exposure? Even a group of children on an exchange program from France
who saw it were amazed and wanted to know if they had such things at
home. (Philippe, are you reading?) I have since had several more
requests for players from people who fell in love with the instrument
at the museum.
Do a little public service and put a lovingly restored instrument in
the hands of an institution that will care for it and show it off, and
the mechanical music passion may yet last until the 22nd century.
