First I want to thank those folks who responded to my question
concerning the governor on my Beckwith piano. I received some good
advice and appreciate it.
As everyone seems to indicate, expect the unexpected! Actually,
I do not feel too bad with what I see as I start the rebuild on my
Beckwith's exhausters and wind chest. There are no signs it has ever
been rebuilt in its life. I have discovered a couple of items where
I am not quite sure to proceed.
The most important issue I see is that the plywood on one of the
exhausters has separated a bit on an edge. Now, I suspect I could glue
it, but should I? It seems like a pretty straight-forward item to
duplicate and I am a decent woodworker. If I duplicate it do I need
to seal the wood inside?
The other unexpected thing I saw was the use of cork type gaskets between
the exhausters, governor, and the wind chest. Did they really use cork
back then? Should I? If so, any special precautions or treatments?
Thank you very much,
Alan Wallace
