Measuring Airflow Through Porous Wood
By Mike Kitner
Hi; this is in response to Craig Smith's posting of a method of
measuring air flow leakage. Yes, Craig I'd be very interested to know
how your system works. It sounds like it is very sensitive.
My idea on measuring the porosity of various kinds of wood has led
to building a square-drop form of pneumatic with the upper and lower
boards made out of Plexiglas or some other non-porous material.
(I haven't finished making this thing yet). On the top stationary
board would be a hole, perhaps 2 square inches, with a non-porous
gasket around it. The bottom board would have a heavy weight attached
to it. I thought to measure how long it would take the device to drop
open with a non-porous cover over the hole then try it on various types
of wood, all of uniform dimensions to get some idea of relative
porosity. Any thoughts on that?
