Hi Folks, I am in the cleaning and inspecting phase of an M. Schulz
upright player action rebuild. The only defects in the piano I can
find are bridge pin cracks (not pin block). Most bridge pins have
a crack emanating out from the pin approximately 1/16 inch and
perpendicular to its associated string. The cracks follow the wood
grain and are open approximately 1/64 inch.
I suspect that this will prevent the instrument from holding a tune and
tuning at this point would exacerbate the problem. Is there any
particular method or material, such as West Systems epoxy, that would
stabilize and fill the cracks without complete disassembly?
On another note, the far left key is signed M. Shulz with the number
404 on the side in pencil. Is this a manufacturer signature or an
assembly line part number and destination? Is it normal that no veneer
was used in this piano, which is quarter-sawn mahogany, and that the
piano action is also primarily Mahogany or was it just cheap wood back
then (circa 1918)?
Thanks,
Jeff Lofton
