Calendering
By Dave Vincent

I have heard of the calendering process being applied to paper and
(recently in this bulletin board) to the rubber layer in pneumatic
cloth. What is this process and what does it do for the material?

Dave Vincent

[ The word is corrupted from cylinder. To calender is to press
[ cloth or paper between cylinders to make it smooth and glossy.
[ Often a thin coating of white clay is also applied to the paper.
[ I suspect that the same calender (the machine) is used to apply
[ the rubber coating to cloth, hence calendered rubber cloth.
