Schubert Impromptu Played by Claudio Arrau
By Albert Petrak

Is it in F Minor or A-Flat Major? Alan Whytock in MMD 00227 inquired
as to the key of the Schubert piece, alleged to have been recorded by
Claudio Arrau.

If it is indeed Schubert's Impromptu Op. 142, No. 4 (D.935), then it
_is_ in F-minor rather than the major key. As I've never heard the
roll [British Duo-Art 010], I can't say for certain. Gerald Stonehill,
who alas, is not in the MMD, certainly has it. Don't believe Nimbus,
which continues to issue Duo-Art roll transfers, making use of his
"robot" intends to release. I will inquire and report.

Go a little further, Alan, and you'll see that 019, also played by
Arrau, is the Valse by the legendary Sophie Menter, one of the
"Amazons" (like Teresa Carreno) of the pianistic world of the time.
I don't believe Arrau ever made rolls for any other company, and these
two are all that research indicates he played for Aeolian, Ltd.

Incidentally, if members are curious to see what has been released by
Nimbus, they have their own web site, with complete detail. Gerald has
told me that the next CD will be another recital by Hofmann, although
he didn't indicate the program. They are up to 8818 at the present
(also by Hofmann).
