MIDI Hardware and Software for PC
By Terry Smythe

Yesterday, we helped our daughter with the purchase of a Roland
digital piano, a modest but decent instrument, quite lifelike in its
piano sound. At it's rear, it has both MIDI-In and MIDI-Out plugs.

She would like to hook this instrument to her Win98 computer and
capture her original compositions. What kind of hardware will she
need to make the connection between the two?

She is also very interested in displaying her compositions on the
computer screen in musical notation for computer editing, then playback
through the midi-in connection, and also printing her compositions on
a laser printer in sheet music format. What software suggestions?

This is the first time I've even come near MIDI, so I'm very much
on the front end of the learning curve.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards,

[ "Sound Blaster Live", published by Creative Labs, is widely
[ available at discount now. It's very nice. Be sure the MIDI
[ adapter cable is included. Most folks with PCs use Cakewalk
[ for the software; I don't like it so I use Master Tracks Pro.
[ Either program will give useful (but not fancy) manuscript
 [ prints. -- Robbie
