Hello all, As mentioned in previous Digests, I have started selling
off some of my Duo-Art rolls via eBay. I have just come across a
piece by J. Ireland and played by William Murdoch called "Decorations
for Piano (No.1: Island Spell)". The roll is numbered 09.
This had me thinking and a quick flick through the 1932 catalog of
Aeolian rolls and roll No. 01 is called "Vistas", composed and played
by Scott. The first ten rolls are
01 Vistas, Composed and played by Scott
02 Puck, Grieg played by De Greef
03 Three Cuban dances, Cervantes, played by Verne
04 Album leaf, Grieg played by De Greef
05 ode Heroique, composed and played by Scott
06 Con Delicatessa, composed and played by Scott
07 Caprice Chinois, composed and played by Scott
08 First Bagatelle, composed and played by Scott
09 Decorations for piano, J. Ireland played by W. Murdoch
010 Impromptu No. 4 Schubert, played by Arrau.
Can we attach any significance to the above? Do the numbers run
chronologically? I would not have thought so, as Aeolian would have
wanted their best sellers on the shelves first. I would have thought
Cyril Scott's "Vistas" and Ireland's "Decorations" would have been way
down the list of 'must have' rolls. I have never heard "Vistas" but
roll 09 is very typical of Ireland's work, very similar to the more
common "Rhondo" from Sonatina. You could say 'an aquired taste'.
Any thoughts?
