"Rhapsody in Blue" & Cornell Musical Clubs
By Harvey Roehl

All this Gershwin talk about a duet interests me, because I heard a lot
of when a small boy. My brother was 12 years older than me, and a very
accomplished pianist. While a student at Cornell he was active in the
Cornell Musical Clubs, and this group had a tradition of a tour each
year to some of the large eastern cities where they would perform.

It would have been about 1932, when I was 8, that he practiced his half
of the Rhapsody in Blue duet for months. I can still hear him pounce
on that wonderful opening glissando!

As I understand it, they performed in Carnegie Hall in New York,
and I've been told that no group ever gets to do that unless they are
really good. John would have been 20 at the time.

None of this has anything to do with mechanical music except as
it encouraged me to carry on with my piano lessons after my parents
trotted me to the neighborhood teacher at age 5 and this in turn led
to my excitement when I first heard a player piano at age 10!
