Copying Music Rolls With a Frame Punch
By Tom Lear

Have been researching the MMD Archives for some sort of simple paper
punch for home use. Have seen references to the Leabarjan home
perforator and a roll punch manufactured by Robert Streicher.

I have seen that QRS sells a manual "based on" the Leabarjan home
perforator. Not having seen one, I picture it as simple steel bar,
not unlike a tracker bar, with holes, and the punch mounted above
it designed to range back and forth over the bar with some kind of
detent system to snap the punch into each hole position.

I tried to design something like this with an old tracker bar and
a drift, just for an experiment, and it seemed to work, but was very
crude, and I never developed it to the point of practicality.

I had this fantasy about reproducing some of my favorite rolls, that
were in terrible shape by merely laying the old roll atop the new and
tracing the holes and then going back and punching them.

Would the Leabarjan home perforator be the appropriate tool for what
I want to accomplish, and is it still manufactured, or would I have to
track down a used one? If still available, what kinda bucks are we
talking about, for one? What about the Robert Streicher Roll Punch?
Is it set-up specifically for piano rolls, or it is more like a larger
version of a scissors action type of single hole paper punch just for
random holes.

The roll duplicating services I have seen references to seem to be a
whole other level of reproduction from what I'm trying to accomplish,
in that there's usually a minimum number of duplicates required for a
job, like 10 or more.

Thanks.
