New Organs in Germany & German-Speaking Countries
By Ingmar Krause

[ Andy Struble, in 000107 MMD, inquired about firms which make
[ or supply new small crank organs. A list of firms in France
[ and Francophone countries, compiled by Francoise Dussour,
 [ is at http://mmd.foxtail.com/Sources/sources09.html
 [
[ Here's some more information from MMDer Ingmar Krause, who enjoys
[ cranking his own small instruments at festivals and private affairs.
[ I'll soon put this also at the Sources site. -- Robbie

Hofbauer -- oh, well, if that counts as old fashioned monkey organ ...
but, oh well, even Raffin has electronics now. :(((

Most of the new-built organs are in the "20er league", although some
of them are bigger (26, 28, 31, 42 keys).

> Orgelbaumeister A. Stueber
> Eitelstr. 1

I know him; he has a quite good 20er in his program, in nice old
Berlin-style with metal pan-flutes (loud) as the main voice. It's
also very light, very good to carry.

Schlemmer, Wilhelm -- You have to like the sound of these organs,
so I recommend to listen to one of those first. (Ouch! My ear! :-)

Mr. Schlemmer himself is a very nice guy, and he had to cope with
hard luck when his factory, including every copy of his plans and
also including a big street organ he had built for himself, burned down
to the ground while he was in vacation -- no insurance!

Bruns -- also builds a 20er in his very own style, as well as a
reconstruction, or even better: a new construction, around a few rolls
found on a flea-market => the original organ is unknown! I think there
are only six of those and they have a problem since they transport the
roll too fast, so you have to turn veeeerrryyy sloooowwwlyyy.

[ This may be Gloria Schack's favorite instrument! -- Robbie

Hofmann, Eddie -- He came from the Raffin house where he was working
as roll-arranger; builds very rustic, uncoloured wooden-kept organs
which are even quieter then those of Raffin. The sound, to my ears,
is too much like a church organ (that's what he had learned - but so
did Raffin, too). Good for singing. His arrangements also are very
simple, or as I'd call it, church style. Some of them aren't even that
bad! (Better then some others, and also not just "test" pieces, as by
the young Raffin. Mr. Raffin learned about that meanwhile, too, and
he now makes or can make quite good stuff. With a little help from me
it's even improved! ;-))) )

Blueml, Alois -- Restaurator of about every little music box, such as
Ariston, Herophon, Mignon, and so on and so on. He rebuilds Ariston
and Tanzbaer.

I don't know exactly, but also Deleika (which means DEr LEIerKAsten)
should still exist. The firm was started by somebody who left Raffin
and copied his small 20er organ and most of the music on the market.
Quite cheap production, as if you would buy a Mercedes built by Fiat!

He also went into 26er/28er building and also has a electronic box of
his own, which does NOT support MIDI (the new one of Raffin does!), so
you have to buy those boxes with about 100 tunes each by them. :(

I don't know who else I missed by now; perhaps more comes to my mind
again. All I can say is: at festivals it's nowadays not very funny --
all you can see is Raffin, Hofbauer, Raffin, Hofbauer, Raffin, Hofbauer
and perhaps one of the others I mentioned in between.

Ah, now more comes to my mind.

Oehrlein, Franz, of Mainz -- Builds music automats. His monkey organs
mostly have moving figurines in the front. I think he is using a small
paper-roll system originally made by Carl Frei. His moving androids
are well-known and handled with great respect (a jester playing a
German flute, with a little bird on the same verandah answering his
playing).

I don't know if it's Jaeger & Brommer, but some firm is rebuilding the
old Carl Frei monkey organs. Also, I don't know if that firm is gone
again, but I think there is one more in Berlin. [Bacigalupo?]

Somewhere is also a guy building organs like Oehrlein, but with a
barrel inside. Organs like "the fairy-tale-organ" or "the voracious-
dumpling-eater" are well known in the scene. I think I even met that
person, but don't ask me for a name. :(

What else...

Switzerland: Spinnler, Heinz & Rene -- Ariston-rebuilder (they have
their own system); some guy in Genf [Geneva] (French-style)

Belgium: Verbeeck, Johnny; beside street-organs he builds also monkey
organs

Great Britain: Well, ask our FOPS-MMDers :)) I think:
Alderman, Ian builds organs

France: LeLudion; Odin; Robert Hopp (?!?)
Fournier, Marc & Christian (& Christoph?); (see comment to Verbeeck)
