I was sure I had this one in my collection, but I also know of two
other places where it can be seen by all: In the Dover book "Favorite
Songs of the Nineties" at pp. 152-156, and at the Lester A. Levy Sheet
Music Collection site.
That Levy site is a national treasure, in my opinion. I stumbled
upon it by accident while searching for lyrics to Wurlitzer 165 tunes.
I have turned a few people on to it, including MMDer Matthew Caulfield,
and I note that he gave me credit as such in a previous posting. I
can't take credit for the site, but I really can't exaggerate how great
this site is. To search the Levy collection, go to
http://levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu/advancedsearch.html
Look for "baggage" within the "Title" tag. Five items come up, three
of which are different copies of this song. Since it predates 1923,
all of the pages are viewable and downloadable. It was written and
composed by Gussie L. Davis and copyright 1896.
[ The song is erroneously indexed: I searched for "baggage coach" with
[ no luck, because the data compiler committed a grave error: he used
[ the title from the cover art, "In The Baggage-Coach Ahead", but that's
[ wrong! Cover artists often take liberties with song titles. The
[ copyright title correctly appears on the title page, above the
[ music, without the hyphen. -- Robbie
A MIDI version (4:39) can be heard at Doc Wilson's Ragtime MIDI site,
at http://www.geocities.com/~pfwilson/midis.html#SONGS under "Ragtime
Flavored Songs." I just now found this site as I write this and I love
it. (Matthew - I'm checking it for unknown Wurlitzer 165 tunes!)
Other sites of interest include some which contain MIDI renditions of
the songs. One of my favorites is the Parlor Songs Collection at
http://parlorsongs.com/parlorsongs.com/catalog.html which provides a
view of the cover, the lyrics and a MIDI performance which is true to
the original scoring. Most of the songs are from the 1890-1940 period.
Also, "Don Ferguson's Tin Pan Alley" which contains more great lyrics
and MIDI arrangements (no cover illustrations.) The home page is at
http://www.bright.net/~mrbanjo/ and the Song Page Index is at
http://www.bright.net/~mrbanjo/songfiles.htm . There's also "The Ohio
Weaver" at http://www.geocities.com/~ohioweaver/ .
If you are into ragtime, check out the Doc Wilson site mentioned above
and the Primeline Chemical Systems MIDI library (Yes, that name is
correct!) at http://primeshop.com/midlist2.htm#joplin
I know of a few other sites, and a number of lyric sites which I also
have bookmarked. If you would like these please feel free to email me
and I will send you the URLs for those as well, or post in MMD if there
are several requests. But my site inventory is far from exhaustive.
I also note that several MMD subscribers have great multimedia sites
which I have visited. Since I learned about them from these pages,
I do not repeat them here, but they are also worth a look. I am simply
listing here some of the sheet music and MIDI sites which I have
stumbled upon in my travels which may also be of interest to some of
you.
Most of these sites give links to other sites which may be of interest
as well.
Happy listening! :-)
