Welte Wotan
By Art Reblitz

Re: 991230 MMDigest

In response to Andrew Barrett's questions about the Welte Wotan, the
orchestra bells are original. In the example recorded at the Sanfilippo
Collection, there's plenty of space for the bells and action, as the
ornate cabinet is 15' 6" tall, 12' wide and 6' deep! It dwarfs almost
every other orchestrion, including the huge Hupfeld Class III Helios,
Hupfeld Model III Pan Orchestra, and Style 34 Philipps Pianella.

The bells and action are mounted horizontally, behind and above the
music roll mechanism, under the pipe chest.

The bells are controlled by the same lock & cancel perforations in the
100-hole rolls that control the xylophone in Welte Brisgovia piano
orchestrions. The rolls for Brisgovias, Brass Band Orchestrions such as
the Wotan, and 100-note Philharmonic organs have a compatible note scale
but somewhat different register controls.

The Wotan has 419 pipes, two snare drums, and one of the largest bass
drums ever used in an orchestrion. As in most Welte orchestrions, the
pump is very slow-moving and takes up most of the bottom of the cabinet.
